Cotton – The Natural Fiber

Cotton is a natural, renewable and biodegradable fiber. Farming with modern techniques that utilize the best and most advanced technology means that there is now much less land, water and energy use, less soil erosion, and reduced pesticide application per unit output.

As a natural fiber, cotton is special in a great many ways.

  1. Cotton is biodegradable, unlike plastic.
  2. Cotton is hypoallergenic. It doesn't irritate sensitive skin or cause allergies. That is why cotton fabrics are recommended for those with skin allergies and swabs, gauze, and other bandage products are usually made of cotton.
  3. Cotton breathes. It feels cool against our skin because of its micro-porous structure that allows sweat and perspiration to evaporate faster than any other fabric.
  4. Cotton wets easily and absorbs water much more quickly than any other fabric. That is why cotton is great for summers or for a knockout workout session.
  5. Cotton has a naturally textured surface that makes it an effective cleanser. And because the fiber can withstand high temperatures, it can be sterilized.
  6. Cotton has naturally convoluted or bulked fibres that help to trap air within the fabric. This trapped air acts like a thermal insulator and gives protection from heat in summer and cold in winter.
  7. Cotton is static-free. In some critical work uses, it means a lot of protection against a spark that can prove life threatening.
  8. Cotton fabrics can be finished in many different ways. Some finishes enhance the look and feel of the cotton fabric, while others add special characteristics such as water repellency, flame resistance, shrinkage control and others. Cotton fabrics can also be treated with UV blocking agents to provide excellent sun protection  and with antimicrobial finishes to prevent odours, mold and mildew.

Cotton this and cotton that - enough of the advantages of cotton. What are its disadvantages?

Think. Keep thinking.
