Embossing
A process by which a texture is added to a flat surface. Embossing is most commonly used on leathers to produce new stylish effects
Embroidery
A centuries-old art in which fabric is embellished using a needle and thread to create decorative designs.
Empire waist
A waistline in which the natural one is pushed up to just below the bustline. First popularized during the 1800's in France by Napoleon's wife, Empress Josephine, this waistline is still used in women's dresses and shirts to reflect feminine charm.
End-on-end
A plain-woven, cotton shirting fabric. End-on-end typically describes a shirting fabric in which a colored yarn is woven in one direction and a white yarn is woven in the other to produce a chambray effect. However, a colored yarn could be woven in one direction to form stripes or in two directions to form checks.
Engineered
A term used to describe a print or a stripe that is purposely laid out in the cutting or knitting of a garment.
English Cotton Count
An indirect system measuring length per unit of mass, ie. the number of hanks (840 yards) per pound weight.
Eyelet
A type of lace usually made of patterns cut out of a piece of cotton. The perforations are embroidered around the edges to prevent the fabric from unraveling.
