Indigo
A deep blue-violet dye, commonly used in denim.
Inlay
A design, pattern or decoration created by setting a contrasting material into a surface.
Inseam
The seam in a trouser or short that runs from the crotch to the hem. Leg length is measured based on the inseam.
Inset
A piece of material set into a garment as decoration or trim
Interfacing
A fabric that is inserted between the interior lining and outside fabric of a garment to provide and retain the garment's shape. Interfacing can be stitched on or adhered to with heat from an iron.
Interlining
A fabric, typically in cotton or wool that is inserted between the interior lining and outside fabric of a jacket or coat to provide extra warmth, padding or body to the garment.
Interlock
A knit made on a tubular machine that is characterized by basic interconnected stitches. Interlock is similar to jersey, but looks the same on both the front and back, tends to be more stable and, when laid flat, has fewer tendencies to curl at the edges. Interlock is a basic knit, used for everything form T-shirts to sweaters.
Internode
The portion of the stem between nodes; in cotton often used as an indicator of growth, i.e., a greater internode length indicates more rapid growth and possible need of a growth regulator such as Pix.
Intimate apparel
A collective term used to describe women's lingerie and underwear.
Inverted pleat
A pleat made by folding two edges toward a central line and then pressing or stitching the folds into the place.
Iridescent fabric
A knit or woven fabric in which two colors reflect in the light, sometimes to a shimmery effect. Iridescent fabric can be produced either when a yarn in one color is woven with a yarn in a different color, or when one type of yarn is woven with another type of yarn, and then both yarns react differently when the fabric is dyed.
