Yard

When measuring fabric, a unit equal to 36", 3' or 91.44 centimeters

Yarn

A strand of natural or man-made fibers joined together and used in weaving or knitting to make fabric

Yarn Number

Cotton yarn is measured by yarn number, based on how many hanks (840 yards) there are in 1 lb of yarn. The higher the number the finer the thread.

Yarn-dyed

A dyeing process in which the yarns are dyed and then woven or knitted to make fabric

Yoke

A cut of fabric seamed across the top of a pant, skirt or shirt. Yokes can sometimes be decorative, as in a cowboy shirt in which the yoke has become an integral part of the design, or can be practical, as in the split yoke of fine shirts that provides an excellent fit across the shoulders
